June 2008 Archives

Now here's an interesting project.

Dr. Sharon Lail, a Kingsport physician, plans to use Eco-Populace to help put wind turbines and micro-hydro-electric technology on creeks to power her house in the Cloudland community near Roan Mountain in Carter County. The house is on a north-facing slope ideal for wind power but not solar. Lail said she had been looking for a person or company to help her for about three or four years until she read about Eco-Populace in the Kingsport Times-News.

"I couldn't find anyone who wanted to do this more than a hobby," Lail said.

"I'd like to be eventually independent of the grid," Lail said. "I'd like to do it and get it done in the next few years."

Shane LailKyle Cantrell in a posting on New Music on XM highlights the "Greater Storm" album of Asheville-based bluegrass band High Windy, whose members include Shane Lail.

Cantrell, of Nashville, is program director of XM Satellite Radio's Bluegrass Junction/Track 14.

The band's bio of Shane Lail aays:

Shane Lail was born in the foothills of Burke County, NC and raised in the mountains of Madison County, NC. He began playing guitar when he was 15 years old. Shane traveled and had a lot of good times in his first band The New Asheville Grass. This band went west to Grass Valley, CA and opened for the Tony Rice Unit. Later Shane joined Hazel Creek and focused on his singing skills. This group opened for such well-known bands as Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver, IIIrd Tyme Out, and Blueridge.

A highlight of Shane's musical career was joining Alison Krauss and Union Station on stage at East Tennessee State University. Shane enjoys spending time with his wife and children when not on the road. Music occupies most of his time, but when he is home in the mountains, he tries to make some time to search the hills for Native American artifacts.

Billy Lail
Charles "Billy" Lail has won FOX 31's "Rescue My Dad" contest.  His daughter wrote us a letter talking about how hard her father worked after losing both his job and his home without any prior notice.

Harley Lail, right field for the University of South Carolina baseball team, was injured in a NCAA Baseball World Series regional game Friday in Raleigh.

South Carolina right fielder Harvey Lail, who was injured on Friday when he slid into the fence for a foul ball, didn't start for first time in 60 games. Andrew Crisp took Lail's place in the outfield and the No. 8 spot in the lineup. Lail is listed as day-to-day with a bruised knee.

"He might be able to play," (USC Coach Ray) Tanner said. "He surprisingly was out for infield tonight. I didn't expect to see him in infield after we started. He wasn't 100 percent -- it was a little bit tight -- but he doesn't have anything broken. He may try to play tomorrow. We'll just have to wait and see."

The Oklahoman series of stories on softball superfans includes Todd Bowman and Mike Lail, super fans of the UCLA softball team. There's a photo, but it's not ID'ed so it's a tossup as to which one is Todd and which one is Mike.
